अथ योगानुशासनम् ॥ १.१ ॥

Now, the teaching of Yoga.

The First Sūtra — Atha Yoga Anuśāsanam

Acharya Bhagyashree Joshi Ji

Notice what Patañjali does not do.

He does not begin with Yoga is… He does not begin with a flourish, a salutation, a promise. He begins with athanow. And he places it before everything else. Before the topic. Before the method. Before the goal.

The traditional commentators take this seriously. Atha is not a filler word. It is, they say, the moment a seeker has come to readiness. Something has fallen away — the search outside, the noise of comparison, the appetite for one more distraction — and a quiet has opened. Now you can study. Not before.

So the first instruction in Patañjali's Yoga is not to do anything. It is to arrive.

If you find yourself reading this and you are still half-here, half-elsewhere, let the sūtra be its own teaching. Close the tab. Step away from the screen. Sit, even for a minute. Let the now arrive. Then return.

There will be more sūtras. There is no hurry. The whole thing waits for atha.
